Bugs and Boys (Family Sesson Preview)

I have a bug scream. It's kind of a "Eeeekk!" and if the bug(s) are on me, it's accompanied by undignified swatting and jumping about. And unfortunately, this was the particular stance I was in when this lovely family met me for the first time. I had been cleaning my lenses when I looked down and saw half a dozen mosquitoes vying for the best place on my legs. Fortunately, this family was most gracious about the bugs and we managed to have a great session.

These twin boys were the CUTEST little guys ever! Seriously, I told my husband that I'd never wanted twin boys until I met them. Besides being adorable, they were so laid back and pleasant. Here they are in their tuxes they had for an upcoming wedding.

I love this shot of the boys loving on their mom (who by the way, has the most incredible bone structure, does she not?)

Yes, I debated whether a picture of my legs would be an appropriate ending to a blog entry. I've decided it is not, but here's the pic regardless. What we photographers will do for the shot! I'm hoping that the precious boys made it out without nearly as many bites.

Love of a Lifetime

Today is Ezra's and my 11th anniversary! The couple in this video is preparing to celebrate 45 years together. That deserves a "wa-HOO"!

Photographing this lovely couple was an amazing experience. First of all God blessed us with the most perfect weather we could have asked for. Secondly, seeing and trying to capture the love and the bond that these two have together was humbling. We did our session at the Peaks of Otter, a location that has held great significance for the Rubles over the decades that they have built their lives together.

Dodging the Prom (go'ers that is!) Sneak Peek Preview

I had the privilege of photographing the family of one of my dearest friends this past weekend. She decided to have her session at one of my favorite local shooting locations - Virginia Western's Community Arboretum. Oopps! We forgot prom for several high schools was the same day....and I guess the arboretum is also a favorite location of several HUNDRED other people, most of whom were armed with cameras. By the way, prom dresses have sure changed from when I was in high school (which according to my 6 year old is back when Jesus walked the earth) but that's probably another post, perhaps on a different blog! :) Fortunately, we were able to find a quiet little nook with some nice light and soon the inundation lightened and then disappeared altogether.

So without further ado and ramblings, here is "T", a wonderful young guy and a great friend of my son. His mom was a little worried about his shoe laces, but I think they just MAKE this portrait!

Baby sister is a total doll! I love the soft colors in this image below.

I LOVE/HATE MY COMPUTER

Here's a little straggler (the picture, not the child!) that I meant to post yesterday with the preview. Boy, last night I wanted to kick the wires out of my computer! It kept locking up on me, and blogger kept erasing my post every time I wrote it...I had to give it 4 tries before it worked. I just might have to start looking at one of those fancy-smancy blogs that I've been avoiding....

So anyway, I thought this image was cute. I love how the backlighting lights up his blond curls. As always, click the picture to enlarge. :)

Downtown Swagger (Sneak Peek Preview)

I've got a looong "sneak peek" for you today! I love these pictures and I had a terrible time narrowing them down.

The threat of afternoon rain prompted us to move this session to early morning. What a beautiful day! Glorious sunshine, happy kids and I managed to get a cup of coffee in before we started....couldn't ask for more. ;)

Love is All You Need

Although I love photographing my many pre-schoolers, it was a refreshing change of place to photograph this beautiful bride! Tracie and John tied the knot a few weeks ago, but these bridals were taken in February. We did the session at the Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke. This session was the first time I've toured the museum - it's beautiful! I look forward to going to see some of the exibits sometime with my husband.

Tracie just shone in her wedding gown; she looked truly gorgeous!

Dark Skies and Sunny Kids (Sneak Preview)

We barely dodged rain for this downtown session, and sadly, the moody weather did not come with cool, moody lighting. Fortunately, the 2 darlings in these pictures were little rays of sunshine! Mr. C. has sure grown up since I last photographed him and I was introduced to his baby sister - a total doll. Perhaps this may be an odd thing to say, but big brother has the greatest cheekbones. Isn't he cute?

Senior Portraits

Wow, I can hardly believe that the school year will soon be coming to an end! My oldest son will have sucessfully completed his Kindergarten year. I swear time has sped up since having kids! And I imagine that the mama of this lovely senior girl is thinking the same thing. I am trying to treasure this time that my boys are entrusted to my care, but it always seems that some well-meaning soul wants to remind me of the briefness of these years right when I've had the worst day full of childish tantrums and sleepless nights! Lol!

This senior girl is soooo lovely - both inside and out! We had a fun laid-back session at Virginia Western's Arboretum.

Fresh and New

Ahhh, newborns. Wrinkly, soft skin. Delicate little fingernails. Baby fine eyelashes. You mothers know just how fast they change and grow! This little peanut is only one week old in these images. Newborn portraits need to be done in the first 2 weeks of life in order to best capture the way new babies will "curl" up in that sweet fetal position. Miss "N." was the best little model; she slept so soundly! Maybe as the youngest of 4 you learn to sleep under any conditions. Ha! Thank you, Jess, for waiting so patiently for your "sneak peek." Your baby is just beautiful!

The blue, vintage suitcase (below) actually belonged to the baby's grandmother. I was delighted when I saw it!

Yea! My sweet Austin FINALLY went back to school this week, after having gone only 3 partial days this entire month. We've had a crazy amount of snow this year! So now I can buckle down and get some work done. ;)

Hello! I know things have been quiet around here lately. Actually, let me clarify that statement...the BLOG has been quiet, NOT the Amiss household! No, we have been quite busy with snow forts, snow boots, snow shoveling, snowmen...you get the point! It has been such a crazy winter...I don't believe my kindergartener has had a full [no delays] week of school since before Christmas break! Here are some pictures of the boys playing this past weekend.

Micah acts so funny when we bundle him up in his snow get-up. At first, he wasn't sure if he could move, so he wouldn't turn his head or walk or anything. With time, he loosened up a bit!

Austin made a slide out of a snow drift.

My hero! My dad! He saved the day plowing our driveway. :)

I wanted to remind everyone that Catherine Amiss Photography will be CLOSED to photo sessions during the entire month of January. I take this month every year to spend more time with my family and to brainstorm about the coming year. I am very excited about introducing some NEW PRODUCTS this year! (Albums, photo boxes, cards....oh my!)

I am also super excited about attending a photo expo in Nashville in a few weeks, where there will be 600 different vendors! I haven't committed to exactly which products will be making their debut with Catherine Amiss Photography yet, because I want to attend the expo first to see first hand which products will set themselves apart in terms of quality and style. Stay tuned.....I'll post my findings on the blog.

I will still be responding to email and phone messages, so if you have a question or want to book a session for February or for the springtime, I'll be happy to help. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Here is our family card from this year. It's a trifold card, so it has a front and back and six (yes, SIX!) squares for pictures. The first two images are what it would look like all flattened out, but really the finished card is only 5x5 inches all folded up. I took some pictures so you can see better how a trifold really looks.

This is the middle of the card (or "inside") when it's all opened up.

And lastly, the image on the left is the back of the card (folded) and the image on the right is the way the back of the trifold looks when it's opened up.

So, these pictures of my boys were taken at Carvin's Cove at the end of October. I had to laugh (so as not to cry!) after the session because I think I always understand my clients a little better after I photograph my OWN kids! Sometimes when I pull out the camera, my usually sweet, wonderfully behaved children become little crazy people! It seems as though every client worries about the behavior of her children and I'm always telling them to just relax, let the kiddos play....we'll get some great shots. And I really mean it! I'm very comfortable with children, but yes, I DO understand your frustration when you're one year old won't let the 5 year old anywhere near him. :) (Hence, the cover shot.)

Mill Mountain Session Preview

This little cutie is the daughter of a good friend of mine. Her family came into town last weekend and we had lots of fun playing in the leaves at my house. Little Miss "C" had lots of fun trying to eat them!

Joy and Mud (Preview)

These brothers were SO much FUN to photograph! They are just the neatest kids - full of life, joy and lots of "rough and tumble"! (But still sweet and respectful!) Usually the more kids in a photograph, the harder it can be for the photographer, but not in their case. These guys cracked each other up so easily that it was hard not to get them smiling together. In fact, this is the first preview that I've ever posted with all sibling shots! I do have great indivuals and family images from this session too, but I just couldn't resist these brotherly moments. Makes me proud to have 2 boys of my own. :)

Can you tell they're competitive?

Do you remember that grade-school game of quick reflexes where you put your hands out palm down with your partners' hands palm up under yours? They try to lightly smack your hands and you try, of course, to not get smacked! I love the image below. It's the one and only picture I took of this game, because as soon as I'd suggested it I realized that it probably wasn't the smartest game to ask two wild boys to play. :) Maybe they didn't get the memo reading "try to LIGHTLY smack your partners hands...."

Sweet Sisters - Preview

I had the privilege of photographing the family of my life-long best friend this past weekend. Unfortunately, the morning clouds provided us with a steady, rainy drizzle. So on a whim, we moved our outdoor session to the covered walkway outside of Hotel Roanoke. It was really pretty and provided us with some shelter. We did have to work around three parked Harley's, however. (I'm pretty sure biker portraits are not what my friend had in mind for her 2 darling daughters!)

The girls are just so sweet and cute. The youngest was born the day after I had my second child! (How cool is that?) :) Here are a few of my favorites from our session.

Amiss Beach Trip

Our family headed to Emerald Isle, NC for a lovely beach vacation earlier this month. We met up with some extended family for a week of R&R. It's amazing now, looking at these pictures, how far away the vacation already seems!

The image below is my favorite. I'll have to find room somewhere on my walls for it!

I thought getting helium balloons for a romp on the beach sounded like a great idea. Unfortunately, the "session" ended in tears when my 5 year old accidently tripped and the balloons, of course, took off heavenward. (And, no, I was not the one crying!) :)

Pure Sunshine

It was a beautiful, albeit toasty, day for this summer session. We scampered around Virginia Western's arboretum looking at fish and having a teddy bear tea party. This "Little Sunshine" was so sweet...don't you just love her dress?

Itchy Field

I've often admired portraits done in breezy-looking fields. So when our own backyard sprouted little white flowers, I decided I had to take the fam down into the field for a fun photo session, and to commemorate Micah's first birthday. NOTE to any other crazy photog people: this is a BAD idea! The [very scratchy] grass was waist high to an adult and it is TICK season. Yikes! Plus my husband and I have some really bad allergies. We were super itchy afterwards. I have to give mad thanks to Ezra, for loading up the red chair in the lawnmower trailer and smashing a LOT of grass down for us, so we could walk. And all without complaining. :)

Last night my sweet hubby was giving the kids a bath while I was working. I happened to look out the window and noticed the amazing, foggy lighting outside. You know, the kind you get when it's been raining all day and then the sun breaks throught the clouds, right before sunset. Ahhh...So I yelled up to Ezra to please get Austin out of the bath pronto, while I grabbed the baby and my camera. I'm so glad I got these shots....I just love my 3 boys! Sigh...I think these will make a great Father's Day gift. I'm counting on Ezra not checking my blog until then. :) Oh, and Austin never made it back into the tub. Oh well!

I love this one below. I was actually just trying to get a test shot, but I like the way the boys are turned as they hear their Daddy approaching. Also, seeing Micah standing like that makes me smile...he pulls up constantly now, but he looks like such a big boy here!

Taking after Mommy? Austin loves his camera. It's cheap and takes horrible pictures, and I think he may have to get an upgrade this Christmas. He insisted on contributing to the photo shoot. I really wished I had captured this on video because he was hilarious...ordering Ezra and Micah around, but in a very polite, direct way (much better than me!) "Scoot this way and turn a little more!"

Sweet Sibs

I love, LOVE the image below of this little guy. Actually, I love most of the portraits from this day, which is why this preview is somewhat extended! This spunky boy and I had lots of fun looking for "sneaky ducks" during our session. Little sister is so sweet and mellow, and was enthralled with the blades of grass on the ground. She reminded me of my little Micah in that they find their world so exciting and new!

Prom

Ahhh, prom. Remember those days? We got super lucky with the weather; the rain that was sprinkling down (as I was driving to the session!) gave way to a beautiful evening. We did the session at a local arboretum, where apparently dozens of other prom-goers and their families had the same idea! I have to admit...I felt so old when I saw this beautiful girl. The last time I'd seen her, she was in early elementary school! Her mother used to be my Sunday school teacher when I was in the sixth grade - and mom still looks fabulous! Hope you guys had tons of fun. :)

I recently went to VA beach for her baby shower and we took these maternity pics in the hotel before joining another good friend for a much needed girls' night! Ezra, the ever wonderful dad, took the boys to a children's museum with his cousin and her girls. What a nice weekend!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, and is off to a good start of a fresh new year! Here are a few pictures of my boys on Christmas day. As you can see, Austin got some policeman gear, which he wears with pride and self-bestowed authority! He seems to be quite interested in jail these days....hmmm. And I got a new lens which I had a blast playing with. It's got a nice wide aperature, but no zoom, which I'm having a hard time adjusting to!

Micah was the last one to wake up on Christmas morning!

Austin spent the afternoon trying to "trap up" anyone who would sit still.

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! We had a grand time at Ezra's folk's house, where I attempted to photograph the 5 little cousins together! I'll post those soon. For now, I have another sneak peek of a family who have been waiting so patiently.

One of the things that I love about my job is seeing kids grow up! I've photographed this family a number of times, and man, it doesn't seem very long ago that "Miss A." was just a little bitty baby. Now they have a new addition. A very cute and smiley addition. Mr J. seems like such a great big brother and is so grown-up for a pre-schooler!

It was so cold outside when we took these images. The kids were troopers! So were Mom and Dad. ;)

So...I was headed out the door to a session this past weekend on a glorious day [and so proud of my self for leaving 15 minutes early to scope the location out], when this sight (see below) greets me....

...a train STOPPED across the tracks near my house! What a morning! After numerous calls to Norfolk Southern and to a very forgiving family, I finally made my way to our session location, a beautiful duck pond near Roanoke.

Now on to the fun pictures!!! This young man looks like a little model - just so handsome.

Miss S. is one of the friendliest and most adorable kids I've ever met! She kept saying, "Ms. Catherine, wait for me!"

Okay, so I'm not into the ghost and goblin thing, but I can't think of anything more fun than dressing up in cute costumes and getting free candy! Here is a picture of Austin last Halloween. Poor thing - he was sick! This year he's super excited (he's been making this squealing sound all morning) and will be decked out as....superman! Micah is going trick-or-treating as a bear. I guess Mommy will have to help out with the chocolate! :) I will be sure to post pictures from this year soon. Here's my little "Blue." (Thanks to Mom for helping me make the costume!)

Big Brother and New Baby - Sneak Peek

Who doesn't love new little babies? This little girl is especially pretty, with delicate features. (And the whole family has beautiful baby blue eyes!) Big brother and I went on lots of adventures during this session, including looking at fish and climbing stone pillars (well, I left most of the climbing up to him!).

This little guy is just 3 weeks younger than my baby. Mr. G. is a real charmer. He was so calm and smiley, and very easy-going. Look at that head full of hair! So sweet!

Big brother was lots of fun and enjoyed running around outdoors.

My little Micah is 3 months old today. Where does the time go? It's so easy for me to be nostalgic, but really the first few weeks are brutal and not ones I'd wish to repeat! It's so much more fun now that he can smile and coo (and sleep most of the night!) My "little bear" just melts my heart! So does his older brother, who lately has been telling Ezra and me that we are "the best mommy and daddy in the whole world!" I need to get that on video camera to replay when he's a teenager!

Sneak Peek - Adorable Little Blond

Aren't you loving this cooler fall weather? We had a beautiful day for this session at the arboretum. I've photographed this sweet girl several times before, and I can't believe how fast she's growing! We had a fun time walking around and smelling flowers. Little Miss M. posed like a pro until she let us know that she was done! Her mom and dad are just the nicest people to be around and it made for a nice laid-back session!

Now Scheduling for Fall!

I am now scheduling for the fall season. I will be holding sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays at 10am or 5:45pm. I am excited to be getting back into the swing of things! Thanks again to all of my wonderful clients (and potential clients!) for being so understanding during my pregnancy and maternity leave. I can't wait to see how your children have grown! If you know you want a session before Christmas, be sure to schdule EARLY, as sessions are limited and fall is a popular time for portraits!

My Little Train Engineer

Ezra and I took the boys (I'm just getting used to saying boyS-plural!) to the park recently on a beautiful summer evening. The park has an old caboose for kids to play on and I was pleased to see it had just received a fresh coat of paint! Austin wore his train engineer outfit for the occasion. He has a new bedspread in his room with trains on it, so I plan to hang a nice large gallery-wrapped canvas of this image on his wall to match!

For some reason, this image reminds me of pictures I've seen of me when I was a kid (minus the costume!).

Daddy can always elicit the good smiles!

This image is done with a vintage finish. This face that Austin makes always cracks up his Auntie J!!!

And lastly, here's one without the train getup.

Micah was asleep most of the evening, and when he was awake, he wasn't feeling particularly photogenic...so no pictures of him this evening!

Our second boy was born on June 28th, 2008. Micah Corbin Amiss is now 6 weeks old. We are just so blessed to have him make it to 37 gestational weeks (unlike his big brother did). We are all doing very well although we're TIRED! I've forgotten what it's like to be so sleep-deprived. Austin is just the best big brother ever. He is ever patient and gentle and just plain sweet with Micah. Just wait until Micah is old enough to get into Austin's stuff. Ha! I've posted some pictures of our new little baby boy...I had a hard time narrowing them down! Some were taken at the hospital and the others when Micah was 6 days old. Work on Hold

Well, I am so sorry to say that I will not be able to hold any photo sessions for a while. I have been having preterm labor issues and at my doctor's appointment yesterday had a preterm labor indication test come back positive. So...the doctor said that I cannot work for the meantime. My 4 year old son was born at 34 weeks, and I am 33 weeks today, so we are hoping that this little guy will wait at least a few more weeks.

For those of you who have already booked sessions, I will be contacting you individually. Those of you who had hoped to schedule a session in the future, please check back because I will try to keep updates of my work schedule on the blog. All orders that are still out will be completed, so if you have already had a session and have not ordered, go ahead, and feel free to email or call with any questions. I am SO SORRY for this inconvenience! Thank you for being so understanding!!

Ultrasound and big me

How cute is the subject in the next two pictures? Okay...I may not have made the photographs, but I've been very busy making the subject! These ultrasound images of our son were taken the last day of February, and I'm just now posting them.

The next two pictures are of me and were taken yesterday by my husband. I was headed to a baby shower! I am now 32 weeks along, and had a preterm labor scare early this weekend. Fortunately everything looks okay for now, so please pray that this little guy stays put for a few more weeks (unlike his big brother did!).

These last two pictures were also taken by my husband and are of me at 27 weeks. I realized that I only have one or two pictures of myself when I was pregnant with my now 4 year old, so I am determined to have a few more taken this time. I am definitely more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it!

And yes, I did heavily air-brush my skin in this last photo. Isn't that a pregnant photographer's prerogative?
